섬유근육통은 몸의 여러 부위에 나타나는 근골격계 통증과 함께, 피로를 쉽게 느끼거나 잠을 잘 못 자며 집중력이 떨어지고 감정 변화도 함께 생기는 등 다양한 부수 증상들이 함께 나타나는 질환입니다.
정확히 왜 이런 현상이 나타나는지 아직 알려지진 않았지만 뇌에서 통증을 느끼는 과정에 이상이 생겨, 더 통증에 예민한 것이 아닐지 많은 연구자들이 의심하고 있습니다.

대체로 여성에게 더 자주 발생하며 긴장형 두통, 턱관절 장애, 과민성 장 증후군, 불안 및 우울감이 함께 나타날 수 있다고 알려져 있습니다.
가장 흔한 증상은 머리, 목, 허리, 어깨, 팔 다리 관절 등 다양한 곳에 만성적으로 나타나는 통증입니다. 또 오랜 시간 잠을 자도 피곤함이 가시지 않기도 합니다.
통증이나 수면 무호흡증, 하지 불안 증후군 등으로 인해 수면의 질은 좋지 않은 편입니다. 집중력을 필요로 하는 작업을 수행하기 어렵다는 것도 연관된 현상 중 하나입니다.

여러 부위에 나타나는 만성 통증을 설명할 다른 질환이 없다면, 증상 자체로 섬유근육통을 진단할 수 있습니다만 그 과정에서 다른 질환이 없는지 알기 위해 피 검사나 영상/전기생리학적 검사가 필요할 수도 있습니다.

만성 통증과 피로감이 지속될 경우 일터나 집에서 평상 업무를 보기 어려워질 수도 있고, 사회 생활이나 대인 관계에 영향을 미칠 수도 있어, 이에 대한 적절한 치료와 관리가 필요합니다.
여러 증상들이 나타날 수 있지만 이를 한꺼번에 해결할 수 있는 치료는 아직 없습니다. 진통 약물, 항우울제, 항-경련제 등이 흔히 처방되는 약물이며 다양한 물리치료, 작업 치료, 상담 치료, 침 치료 등이 비약물적 치료로서 병행될 수 있습니다.
치료의 목표는 증상 조절이며 “완치”를 목적으로 하진 않습니다.
요가나 마사지 등도 증상 조절 목적으로 시도해 볼 수 있습니다.
